What is an AC Shaded-pole Motor?

The Shaded-pole motor is the original type of AC single-phase induction motor. Single-phase AC motors are divided into three types: single-phase induction motor, commutator type single phase motor, and single-phase synchronous motor. Single-phase induction motors are further categorized into four types: split-phase motor, shaded pole induction motor, reluctance start induction motor, and repulsion start induction motor.

The shaded pole motor is extremely popular for ratings below 0.05 HP (~ 40 W) due to its simple construction. This motor is self-starting with one of the poles shaded by a copper ring.
