What is an AC Shaded-pole Motor

The Shaded-pole motor represents the classic model of AC single-phase induction motors. Single-phase AC motors are categorized into three main types: single-phase induction motors, commutator-type single-phase motors, and single-phase synchronous motors. Single-phase induction motors are further divided into four varieties: split-phase motors, shaded pole induction motors, reluctance start induction motors, and repulsion start induction motors.

Shaded pole motors are highly favored for ratings below 0.05 HP (~40 W) due to their remarkably simple construction. These motors are self-starting, utilizing a copper ring to shade one of the poles.
