What is an AC Shaded-pole Motor?
The Shaded-pole motor is the classic type of AC single-phase induction motor. Single-phase AC motors are categorized into three types: single-phase induction motor, commutator-type single-phase motor, and single-phase synchronous motor. Single-phase induction motors further subdivide into split-phase motor, shaded-pole induction motor, reluctance start induction motor, and repulsion start induction motor.
Popular for ratings below 0.05 HP (~ 40 W), the shaded pole motor boasts an extremely simple construction. This self-starting motor features a copper ring-shaded pole and is widely manufactured for small ratings, making it ideal for single-phase AC Motor applications. Motors built with fractional horsepower sizes are termed as small motors.
